How Pellet is licensed.

The software
Pellet is proprietary. Copyright © 2026 Buildraai LLC, all rights reserved. Commercial use, modification, distribution and sublicensing of the source are prohibited without written permission.
Your vault is not. Notes are markdown, canvases are JSON Canvas, whiteboards are Excalidraw's own format, handwriting is open JSON. Nothing in the license touches what you write or the files it lives in — that is the whole design, and it means this license can never be the reason you lose access to your own work.
Trial and activation, as built
- 14 days to try it, with no account and no card.
- After that, a license key unlocks writing. Reading your vault is never gated — an expired trial can still open, search and export everything.
- A license is activated per device and can be moved: deactivating one machine frees the slot for another.
- Being offline never locks you out. Pellet re-checks a license about every 14 days, and keeps working for 30 days with no successful check at all. A plane, a bad hotel network or a dead license server is not your problem.
Open-source components
Pellet is built on a lot of other people's work — Electron, React, CodeMirror, Excalidraw, pdf.js and many more — under permissive licenses (MIT, Apache-2.0, BSD-2-Clause, ISC). Those components remain governed by their own terms, which the proprietary license above does not and cannot override.

The full end-user license agreement will be published here before Pellet is released. This page describes how the software behaves; it is not that agreement.
